Alison Gensmer was born in Sarasota, Florida. Her childhood was centered around imaginary scenarios played out in her family’s backyard. This fascination with the fantastic has influenced her artwork immensely. Alison’s ceramic sculpture focuses on imaginary animals of her own creation. Her use of sophisticated modeling leads to creatures that can be hand held and nurtured. Alison was educated at the University of Florida and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Production and Costume Design in May of 2016. Her experience in the School of Theatre and Dance’s costume shop offered the opportunity to design and create costumes for productions across a broad spectrum. Techniques used in costuming are applied to ceramics forming methods, allowing gesture and expression in the animals Alison creates. And vice versa, the modeling capacity required for ceramic sculpture lends itself to many applications in the world of theatrical art.
